Homchang Rally in Karbook Division Highlights Demand for Roman Script for Kokborok

A Homchang Rally was organized in Karbook Division as part of a larger statewide campaign for announcing Roman script to the ‘Kokborok’ language. Youths, members of the public and local leaders turned up in large numbers for the rally.

Significantly, the organisers held the rally in a peaceful manner and ensured discipline during the programme. The program thus conveyed a loud and clear message by way of democratic articulation as well as public involvement.

Leadership Presence Adds Significance

With the presence of Hon’ble MLA Shri Sanjoy Manik Tripura, the rally was made more significant. His presence added the political weight of his supporters to the event. In addition, many party and youth leaders participated in the rally and enthusiastically mixed with participants.

Clear Demand for Roman Script | Homchang Rally Karbook Division

In Homchang Rally, speakers have categorically mentioned about the need of Roman script for Kokborok. They said Roman script is already extensively used in daily transactions, online platforms and informal education among the Kokborok speakers. So any formal recognition would be based upon pragmatic use and social reality.

Speakers also pointed out that Roman script could make learning for students easier and help popularise the language among the new generation. As such, they think doing so would help maintain linguistic identity.

On the other hand, the rally witnessed active participation of youths carrying banners and shouting slogans in favour of the demand. Then from various villages of the Karbook Division, community participants also flooded into the program.

There’s to be no fractiousness or violence at any stage during the rally, the organisers stressed. As a result, the event was kept orderly and all of the participants could express their standpoint safely and respectfully.

The Karbook Division rally was one part of a greater Homchang movement that is currently gripping Tripura, organisers said. Related rallies have been held across the state to raise awareness and generate collective power.

Leaders at the rally also hoped that sustained democratic engagement would spur authorities to begin a dialogue. They demanded that the government should seriously think about the aspirations of Kokborok-speaking communities and adopt an inclusive approach towards language policy.

The programme was organised under the aegis of The Indigenous Hani Bwssas of Tripura, among others. Organisers said the rally was about creating awareness and facilitating discussion – not disruption. As such, they urged peaceful participation and constructive dialogue on the question.
