NCW Leads Child Marriage Awareness Drive in Udaipur, Tripura
Udaipur, Tripura | July 30: The National Commission for Women (NCW), in collaboration with the Tripura State Women’s Commission, organized an awareness programme on child marriage at Rajarshi Kala Kshetra in Udaipur. The event highlighted the importance of protecting women and children’s rights.
The programme was chaired by NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar. She urged society to work together to eliminate child marriage and protect every child’s future.
Child Marriage Remains a Major Concern
Vijaya Rahatkar said child marriage harms children’s education, health, and overall development. She added that girls deserve equal opportunities to study and build successful careers.
Moreover, she encouraged parents, teachers, and community leaders to spread awareness in every village. She said collective action can help end this social evil.
Senior Officials Join the Programme
Several senior officials attended the event. They included Tripura State Women’s Commission Chairperson Jharna Debbarma, Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy, Gomati District Magistrate Rinku Lather, and Superintendent of Police Arindam Das.
In addition, officers from different government departments participated in the awareness programme.
Police Stress Strong Law Enforcement
The programme also featured a technical session titled “Protection and Enforcement: Upholding the Legal Age of Marriage and Safeguarding Children’s Rights at the Grassroots.”
During the discussion, Sub-Divisional Police Officer Debanjali Roy explained the importance of enforcing child marriage laws. She said authorities must act quickly whenever they receive information about child marriage.
Furthermore, she urged citizens to report such incidents without hesitation. She noted that public cooperation helps the administration protect vulnerable children.
Legal Experts Explain the Law
Assistant Professor of Law Anindita Chowdhury from ICFAI University explained the legal age for marriage and the provisions of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
She also discussed the penalties for violating the law. According to her, better legal awareness can reduce child marriage cases across the state.
A Call for Collective Action
Finally, the programme ended with a strong appeal for collective action. Speakers encouraged families, schools, community leaders, and government agencies to work together.
As a result, they believe Tripura can build a safer future for women and children. They also expressed hope that continuous awareness campaigns will help eliminate child marriage from society.
