Tension Grips Kailashahar’s Ramkrishna Mahavidyalaya as TISF–ABVP Face-Off Escalates
Kailashahar, Tripura: Tension gripped Ramkrishna Mahavidyalaya in Kailashahar after a confrontation between supporters of the Tipra Motha-backed Tripura Indigenous Students Federation (TISF) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
The dispute began when a TISF delegation visited the college to submit a memorandum to Principal Dr Ajit Barman. TISF leaders said they had received permission from the college and police administration before visiting the campus. The organisation said the memorandum raised concerns about issues affecting indigenous students.
TISF Delegation Faces Protest
According to TISF representatives, ABVP supporters stopped the delegation at the college gate. The protesters allegedly closed the gate and raised slogans against Tipra Motha.
The tense situation prompted police, Tripura State Rifles personnel and central security forces to deploy around the college. Security personnel later escorted the TISF delegation into the campus.
The delegation submitted its memorandum to the principal before leaving the college premises under security protection.
ABVP Launches Protest
The situation took another turn after the TISF delegation left. ABVP supporters entered the principal’s office and began a protest.
The protesters later locked Principal Dr Ajit Barman inside his office. ABVP leaders alleged that some people linked to NSUI and SFI entered the campus while posing as Tipra Motha supporters. They also alleged inappropriate behaviour toward female ABVP students and claimed that some students faced pushing during the confrontation.
The allegations from the two groups have not been independently verified.
College Property Reportedly Damaged
The unrest also reportedly caused damage inside the college building. Reports said a curtain stand near the principal’s office broke and curtains were torn. An adjacent office also reportedly suffered damage.
The college’s electricity supply reportedly went off temporarily during the disturbance.
Principal’s Assurance Ends Protest
The ABVP protest continued for several hours. Dr Barman later held discussions with ABVP representatives and asked them to submit their demands in writing.
The principal assured the protesters that he would forward their demands to the appropriate authorities and seek necessary action. Following the assurance, the protesters ended their demonstration and released the principal from the office.
Security Tightened at College
The incident led to a significant security presence around Ramkrishna Mahavidyalaya. Authorities stepped in to prevent the confrontation between the rival student groups from escalating further.
The episode has renewed concerns about student politics, campus discipline and safety at the Kailashahar college. Further action will depend on the findings of the authorities and any formal complaints submitted by the groups involved.
For now, the competing allegations remain subject to verification, while college authorities and law enforcement agencies are expected to focus on maintaining peace on the campus.
