Police Launch Investigation After Thousands of Fish Found Dead

A suspected case of deliberate fish pond poisoning has sparked concern in Tripura’s South District after thousands of fish were found dead in the pond of a village panchayat head. The incident reportedly occurred in West Harina Gram Panchayat under the Satchand RD Block of Sabroom Sub-Division.

According to the family of Panchayat Pradhan Shikha Das, unknown miscreants allegedly poured poison into their fish pond during the night. The following morning, family members discovered a large number of dead fish floating on the water and along the pond’s edge, leaving them shocked by the extent of the damage.

Police Visit the Spot

As news of the incident spread, local residents gathered at the scene. Officers from Sabroom Police Station later arrived to inspect the pond and speak with the family.

Shikha Das stated that no one witnessed the alleged act, but the family believes it took place late at night. A written complaint has been submitted to the police, and an investigation is currently underway.

Family Claims Loss of Over ₹1.5 Lakh

The family estimates that nearly five quintals of fish were destroyed in the incident. They claim the financial loss exceeds ₹1.5 lakh, making it a significant setback.

The exact cause of the fish deaths is yet to be confirmed. Authorities have not officially stated whether poison was used, and the matter remains under investigation.

Growing Concern Among Residents

The incident has raised concerns among residents, who point to another recent case in which a rubber plantation in the Sabroom area was allegedly vandalized. Locals are urging law enforcement agencies to identify those responsible and take appropriate legal action.

Police have assured that the complaint is being investigated. No arrests have been reported so far, and officials have not commented on any possible motive behind the alleged incident.
