Widow’s House at Risk of Collapse After Continuous Rainfall in Karbook

Karbook, Gomati District, Tripura: Continuous heavy rainfall has left a widow and her son living in fear. Their mud house has developed deep cracks and is leaning dangerously. The family lives in North Ekchhari ADC Village under Karbook Block.

Family Struggling After Husband’s Death

The affected woman is Satyamala Chakma, a resident of Neeldhan Para. Her husband, Laxmidhan Chakma, died about seven to eight years ago. Since then, she has been supporting the family as a daily wage labourer. Her income is barely enough to meet basic needs.

House Damaged by Heavy Rain

Local residents said continuous rainfall has badly damaged the earthen house. Large cracks have appeared in several places. The structure is slowly tilting and could collapse at any time.

The house is located about 40 metres from the Gomati River. Ongoing rainfall and riverbank erosion have increased the risk. Residents fear that the situation could become dangerous if the weather worsens.

Nights Filled with Fear

Satyamala Chakma said she has not been able to sleep peacefully for several nights. She worries that the house could collapse while she and her son are asleep. She also fears that riverbank erosion may threaten their home. Every night has become a time of anxiety for the family.

Residents Demand Immediate Assistance

Local residents alleged that no government officials have visited the site so far. They urged the administration to inspect the damaged house without delay. They also requested emergency relief and temporary shelter for the family.
